I just went to visit a unique site recently re-opened to the public: the Würzburg radar
Located inland between Juno & Sword beaches
next to the town of Douvres-la-Délivrande.

It is surrounded by several big bunkers buried underground, some not yet open to the public but
the most amazing one is called ANTON,and you can really
imagine what life was like for the 250 soldiers
who worked & lived on this site
built by 1100 men in June 1943.

The coast of Western France was full of
different kinds of radars:
Freya, Wasserman, Mammuth, Würzburg...
but the Allies bombarded them in May
and on the night of June 5/6th created all kind of tricky things to prevent them from working:
droping aluminium foil to create blips
on their screens etc...

The Canadians then the British surrounded the place and the Germans were surviving inside thanks to food dropped by air from airplanes coming from their base in the Landes area which explained why so much foie gras & Armagnac was found ! on June 17th when the survivors surrendered, most of them were drunk and the Allies were surprised to see young women coming out as well. The Germans had been having a party when the landings took place !!!
